Dos and Don’ts of Breastfeeding

There is a lot of literature out there on breastfeeding which can get slightly confusing for new moms. Yes, breastfeeding will seem like an uphill battle at times, but the benefits of feeding your baby breast milk make it worth it. It will  boost his\her immune system in the long run,  decrease your stress level and reduce the possibility of postpartum depression. Nourishing your new born baby comes with the responsibility of making sure you do it the right way, at the right times. Here are all the dos and dont's you need to know to make breastfeeding a comfortable process for both you and your baby.

  1. Teach your baby to breastfeed and not simply nipple feed. To do this, hold your breast in to a steady position and allow the baby to take the breast as deeply as feels comfortable by turning it into a pointy shape.
  2. Be aware of when your baby is hungry and feed on demand instead of making a nursing schedule.
  3. Learn the simple RAM technique (Rapid Arm Movement). To do this, move your arms forward with the baby on it towards the breast instead of leaning forward and gently put it in the baby’s mouth.
  4. Buy a high quality breast-pump if your milk supply is low and pump milk after every feeding session. This helps in increasing the milk flow.
  5. Invest in good-quality nursing bras, they will go a long way in ensuring your breasts remain in good form and prevent body aches.

  1. Don't try to compress your breast into the mouth of the baby instead hold them appropriately and let your baby come to your nipple.
  2. If you do keep a regular nursing schedule then don’t let the baby sleep through them.
  3. Don't switch sides before exhausting the entire milk content in your breast.
  4. Lastly, don’t give up!The breastfeeding process is a wonderful time for you to bond with your baby and is essential for your and the baby’s good health.
